Heritage cabin in a Norwegian mountain meadow

Arneberg · Heritage cabin rental

Off-grid quiet, held by old timber and Norwegian light.

Arnebergbua Retreat is part of a small Norwegian tun — a cluster of modest buildings gathered around mountain life. The cabin was used from 1919 by Arnstein Arneberg, Norway’s celebrated architect behind the interior of the UN Security Council Chamber and Oslo City Hall.

On a wall panel inside, the family recorded their visits and fishing trips in their own hand — dated entries running from July 1919 to the last days of August 1945. Arneberg also left a message for any traveller who might find the cabin: to use it in need, but to treat it with care. His signature remains on the inner door.

02 · Hytteliv

The cabin asks you to move at the pace of the fire.

Days here are intentionally simple: coffee on the step, wool layers by the door, candles after dusk. Around the tun, the hand-crafted log timber and old notes make the cabin feel both lived-in and historically rare — a quiet place for reading, walking, resting, and watching the weather pass over the ridge.

Wide sky, old paths, and the hush between trees.

The cabin sits in a protected landscape area, secluded on a dead-end road with no through traffic. Around it, farmers still practise Norwegian mountain summer farming — a living tradition recently recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.
