Open the gate when you see a trout rise or a hatch begins. Row out in the boat, take the canoe for a paddle, or wander along the shore. You live by Finnefjorden, part of the Øystre Slidre state common. The fishing permit is bought on Inatur, and it opens up wonderful trout fishing across eighty mountain lakes. An hour on the water becomes something you simply do, not something you plan.

The cabins sit on a point in Finnefjorden, an arm of Lake Fullsenn. A rowing boat and a canoe belong to the stay, ready down by the boathouse. You can row out in the morning, cast from the shore, walk along the water’s edge, or drive to other lakes in the common.

The permit covers more than Finnefjorden. It allows rod fishing across the whole of the Øystre Slidre state common – around eighty lakes and tarns, and around a hundred kilometres of fishable rivers and streams, from the birch woods up into the high mountains between 850 and 1,500 metres. There is trout in every lake; a few also hold perch. One permit opens a large, unbroken mountain area, not only the water by the tun.

Right by the tun you need only walk down to Finnefjorden. To explore the rest of the common, some lakes can be reached by car – among them on Valdresflya and in Skreddalen – while others lie a walk away. Vinstre is the largest lake in the area. The mountain board (fjellstyret) has maps of the lakes and fishing spots.

You can fish the lakes all year. The only restriction is in streams and rivers, which are closed from 5 September to 25 October. Children and young people fish for free. The fishing permit is bought on Inatur, with detailed rules, terms and prices.

In winter Finnefjorden freezes over, and the ice fishing is very good. The same fishing permit applies, and children and young people fish for free. With the water a short way off, an hour on the ice becomes something you simply do, not something you plan.
